Xanthos: The Defiant Capital

Xanthos was the grand capital of the Lycian Federation.

It is famous in antiquity for its architectural blending of Lycian, Greek, Roman, and Persian styles, but even more famous for the fierce bravery of its citizens.

Twice in history—first when invaded by the Persians in 540 BCE and later by Brutus during the Roman civil wars in 42 BCE—the Xanthians chose collective mass suicide, burning their own city to the ground, rather than surrendering to captivity.

What to look for: The towering Harpy Tomb (a 9-meter-high pillar tomb adorned with reliefs of winged sirens), the Xanthian Obelisk (a massive trilingual stone stele that helped modern linguists decode the Lycian language), and a beautifully preserved 2nd-century Roman Theater.

Letoon: The Sacred Sanctuary

Located just 4 kilometers down the road from Xanthos, Letoon was not a residential city but the holy sanctuary and spiritual center of the entire Lycian League.

According to mythology, the goddess Leto stopped here to drink while fleeing the wrath of Hera after giving birth to Zeus's twins, Apollo and Artemis.

What to look for: The side-by-side ruins of three distinct temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo, and Artemis.

Look down into the flooded Hellenistic Nymphaeum (sacred spring) next to the temples—it is naturally filled with reeds, wild terrapins, and dragonflies.

Major Historical Sites Around Kalkan

Beyond the UNESCO designation, the surrounding coastline is packed with other major city-states of the original Lycian League.

Patara: The Birthplace of Democracy and Saints

Just a 15-minute drive (17 km) west of Kalkan lies Patara, one of the wealthiest naval and trading ports of the ancient world.

Patara holds a legendary place in history for two major reasons: it housed the Bouleuterion (the parliament building of the Lycian League), which historians celebrate as the earliest recorded example of a proportional, representative democracy.

Millennia later, around 270 CE, it became the birthplace of St. Nicholas, who went on to become the Bishop of Myra and the historical basis for Santa Claus.

The Experience: The ruins seamlessly melt directly into the 12-kilometer-long protected sand dunes of Patara Beach.

You can walk through the monumental Roman triumphal arch, explore the grand colonnaded street, and see the restored parliament building before heading down to the shore.

Tlos: The Citadel in the Clouds

Perched dramatically on a rocky cliff about 45 kilometers north of Kalkan, Tlos is one of the oldest and largest Lycian settlements.

Because of its defensive high-ground, it stayed continuously inhabited through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, eventually becoming a stronghold for an 19th-century Ottoman feudal warlord named "Bloody Ali," who built his castle directly on top of the ancient acropolis.

What to look for: The striking cliffside honeycombed with rock-cut house tombs.

Among them is the famous Tomb of Bellerophon, which features a prominent relief carving of the mythological hero riding his winged horse, Pegasus.

Pinara: The Untouched Mountain Retreat

If you want to escape the crowds entirely, Pinara (40 km from Kalkan) sits hidden in a quiet mountain bowl blanketed by olive groves and wildflowers.

When Xanthos became overpopulated in the 5th century BCE, a group of citizens left to found Pinara high in the hills.

Because it requires a bit of an uphill trek, it remains beautifully rugged and raw.

Discerning Collection

What to look for: A vertical, 450-meter-high cliff face that is completely pockmarked with hundreds of rectangular, ancient burial chambers carved directly into the rock.

Practical Travel Comparison

Patara 17 km (~15 mins) Democratic parliament, beachside dunes, St. Nicholas Popular, easily accessible, dual beach/ruin day

Tlos 45 km (~45 mins) Clifftop fortress, Pegasus tomb, 360-degree views Moderate crowds, stunning photography

Pinara 40 km (~45 mins) Wall of a thousand tombs, mountain isolation Completely quiet, adventurous terrain

Tips for Exploring the Region

Beating the Heat: Summer temperatures along the Turquoise Coast can easily top 40°C (104°F) by midday. The best time to explore open-air sites is early morning or late afternoon when the low sun casts a golden glow over the stone.

Footwear: Avoid flip-flops. These sites are rugged, overgrown with brush, and feature loose stone steps. Sturdy sneakers or hiking sandals are essential.

Footnote on the British Museum: If you visit Xanthos, you will notice empty foundations where great monuments once stood. In the 1830s and 40s, British explorer Sir Charles Fellows excavated many of the city's finest treasures—including the original reliefs of the Harpy Tomb and the entirety of the massive Ionic Nereid Monument—and shipped them to London, where they are displayed today.
