Marmaris

📜History of the City

Bader Journal

Suleiman's mother also commissioned the Hafsa Sultan Caravanserai during this period, creating a roadside inn that served as a resting point for travelers and merchants, establishing Marmaris as an essential maritime trading post.

The 18th and 19th Centuries: Geopolitical Interlude

By the late 18th century, Marmaris's natural harbor continued to draw global superpowers. In 1798, British Admiral Horatio Nelson anchored his entire fleet in the safe confines of Marmaris Bay to shelter and resupply before setting sail for Egypt, where he defeated Napoleon’s forces at the Battle of the Nile.

A few years later, in 1801, a massive British fleet of 120 ships and 14,000 troops under Admiral Keith used the bay for an extended eight-week training campaign, further solidifying the town's reputation as one of the finest natural harbors in the world.

Modern History: Disaster and the Tourism Boom

For the early half of the 20th century, Marmaris quietly existed as a secluded fishing and farming village, largely cut off from inland infrastructure by surrounding marshes and rugged mountains.

The 1957 Earthquakes

The physical fabric of old Marmaris was fundamentally altered in 1957, when two devastating earthquakes centered near Fethiye leveled the vast majority of the town.

Most of the historic timber-and-stone houses were destroyed, leaving the ancient castle as one of the very few surviving landmarks.

The Shift to Tourism

In the late 1980s, the Turkish government heavily invested in the "Turkish Riviera" infrastructure, initiating a massive construction and development boom.

Marmaris shifted rapidly from an isolated village reliant on fishing and agriculture to a global tourism destination.

Today, while the modern city stretches miles along the coastline to accommodate hundreds of thousands of summer visitors, the restored Marmaris Castle stands over the harbor as a museum, anchoring the modern resort city to its deep Carian and Ottoman roots.
