Side

🏛️UNESCO & Historical Places

Core Historical Places In Ancient Side

The ancient city occupies a narrow peninsula separated from the mainland by a defensive wall and moat. Walking from the main entrance down to the harbor brings you past centuries of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine architecture.

The Temple of Apollo and Athena

Perched on the very tip of Side’s harbor, these neighboring 2nd-century CE temples are the definitive symbols of the city. While the Temple of Athena remains largely in ruins, five iconic Corinthian columns of the Temple of Apollo have been beautifully re-erected. Looking at the white marble columns framing the turquoise Mediterranean sea offers one of the most stunning photographic backdrops in Turkey.

Built in the 2nd century CE, this massive structure could once hold 15,000 to 20,000 spectators. What makes it unique is its construction engineering: while most Greek-influenced theaters in Asia Minor were carved directly into a natural hillside, Side’s theater is a freestanding Roman design built upward using soaring stone arches. In later centuries, the Byzantines converted the theater into an open-air sanctuary with two distinct chapels.

The Side Archaeological Museum

Housed in a beautifully restored 5th-century Roman bath complex, this museum contains an exceptional collection of artifacts found right on the peninsula. Pay close attention to the highly detailed Roman sarcophagi, intricate marble statues of Greek gods, and inscriptions in the undeciphered native Sidetic language, proving the town maintained a distinct local culture despite heavy Greek and Roman colonization.

The Monumental Fountain (Nymphaeum)

Located right outside the main city gate, this elaborate three-story fountain complex welcomed travelers entering the city. Water was brought down from the Taurus Mountains via a massive 30-kilometer-long aqueduct system to feed this decorative pool and monumental facade.

Nearby Unesco World Heritage Sites & Ancient Highlights

Expanding your radius just outside of Side opens up access to some of the finest ancient architecture still standing today.

Aspendos Theater (Approx. 27 km from Side)

If you make one day trip, make it here. While not yet a primary inscribed UNESCO site, it sits firmly on Turkey’s tentative list and is recognized worldwide as the most perfectly preserved Roman theater from antiquity. Built in 155 CE by the architect Theodoros, the theater boasts an intact skene (the massive stone stage backdrop) and flawless acoustic properties that are still utilized today for international opera and ballet festivals.

Ancient Perge (Approx. 50 km from Side)

Once the flourishing capital of Pamphylia, Perge is a massive archaeological park. Walking down its 500-meter-long colonnaded main avenue reveals a beautifully preserved central water channel that kept the city cool. You can also explore monumental Hellenistic gates, a massive stadium that hosted chariot races, and incredibly expansive Roman bath complexes.

Hierapolis-Pamukkale UNESCO World Heritage Site (Approx. 220 km from Side)

Though further away, this combined cultural and natural UNESCO site is a popular full-day or hot air balloon excursion from Side. Pamukkale features surreal, snow-white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal springs. Directly above these natural pools sits the ancient Greco-Roman spa city of Hierapolis, featuring an expansive necropolis (ancient cemetery), monumental gates, and therapeutic thermal baths frequented by ancient elites.

Off-The-Beaten-Path Treasures Near Side

For a break from the coastal crowds, head inland toward the mountains to find highly atmospheric ruins hidden in nature.

Lyrbe (Seleucia) [14 km North]: Tucked away inside a serene pine forest in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, Lyrbe features a remarkably preserved ancient Greek marketplace (agora). Because it gets far fewer tourists, wandering among the shaded mountain ruins feels like a true discovery.

Sarıhacılar Village [44 km Northeast]: A historical village along the old Silk Road. It is famous for its 800-year-old traditional "button houses" (built using a unique interlocking timber and stone technique without mortar) and a stunning, historic wooden mosque dating back to the Ottoman era.
